ACP Board Signage: The Workhorse Material for Outdoor Signs
ACP — Aluminium Composite Panel — is the single most common base material for outdoor signboards in India, and for good reason: it's rigid, lightweight, weatherproof, and takes both direct printing and vinyl graphics cleanly.
What ACP Actually Is
ACP is a sandwich panel of its own — two thin aluminium sheets bonded to either side of a solid polyethylene (or fire-rated mineral) core. That construction gives it the rigidity and flatness of metal at a fraction of the weight of solid aluminium sheet, which is exactly what large signboards need.
Why It's the Default for Signboards
- Weather resistance: the aluminium face shrugs off Bangalore's sun and monsoon far better than most plastics.
- Rigidity without weight: large boards stay flat and don't sag or warp, while still being manageable to install.
- Print-ready surface: ACP takes UV direct print and vinyl equally well, and its aluminium face gives excellent colour reproduction.
- Cost-effective at scale: for large fascia boards and hoardings, ACP is generally more economical than solid acrylic or metal sheet of comparable size.
Standard vs Fire-Rated (FR) Grade
Standard ACP has a solid polyethylene core; fire-rated (FR) grade replaces most of that core with a mineral compound, giving it much better fire performance. Many commercial buildings and malls now specify FR-grade ACP for cladding and signage — worth checking if your building management has a requirement before ordering.
Common Applications
Shop fascia boards, building name boards, directional signage, hoardings, and as a rigid backing board for acrylic letters and logos mounted on top.

FAQ( 01 )
No — ACP has a plastic (or mineral) core sandwiched between two thin aluminium layers, making it much lighter than solid aluminium sheet while still looking and performing like metal on the surface.
With a good-quality panel and UV-stable print or vinyl, ACP signboards commonly last 8-10+ years outdoors before needing a refresh, depending on direct sun and weather exposure.
Standard ACP can be gently curved for rounded storefronts or pillars; sharper curves usually need a thinner-gauge panel or a different fabrication approach.
Standard ACP is not fire-rated; fire-rated (FR) ACP replaces most of the plastic core with a mineral compound specifically to improve fire performance — ask for FR grade if your building requires it.
3mm and 4mm are the most common thicknesses for signage; larger boards or those needing extra rigidity sometimes use thicker panels.
Both work — UV flatbed printing goes directly onto the ACP surface, or a printed/cut vinyl graphic can be applied over a plain ACP base. Direct print is often more durable; vinyl is easier to update later.
The aluminium face itself doesn't fade, but printed or vinyl graphics on top will fade over years of direct sun exposure — using UV-stable inks and vinyl extends this significantly.
Yes, though for indoor use where weight and outdoor durability matter less, acrylic or foam board sometimes gives a more premium finish for a similar cost.
