Solid Letters: Simple, Dimensional Signage Without Lighting

Solid letters are dimensional, three-dimensional signage without any internal illumination — cut directly from acrylic, PVC, metal, or high-density foam and mounted with a small standoff from the wall so they cast a natural shadow. They give a premium, 3D look at a fraction of the cost and complexity of lit channel letters, since there's no wiring or electrical work involved.

Materials Commonly Used

  • Acrylic: the most popular choice — clean edges, available in many colours and finishes (gloss, matte, mirrored).
  • PVC foam board: lightweight and economical, good for larger indoor letters where weight matters.
  • Metal (stainless steel, brass, aluminium): the most premium option, often brushed or polished for a corporate look.
  • MDF or wood: occasionally used indoors for a warmer, boutique aesthetic.

Why Choose Solid Letters Over Lit Signage

No electrical installation means lower upfront cost, no ongoing power draw, and no maintenance on LEDs or wiring. The shadow cast by mounting letters slightly off the wall still gives real dimensional depth during the day — it's simply not designed to glow after dark the way channel or profile letters are.

Where Solid Letters Work Best

Reception walls, office branding where the space is generally well-lit anyway, boutique retail signage, and any application where a premium 3D look matters more than night-time visibility from a distance.

Solid Letters vs Lit 3D Signage

If the sign only needs to work during business hours or in a lit indoor space, solid letters deliver a dimensional, high-quality look without the added cost of illumination. If night-time visibility or maximum street-level impact matters, lit 3D signage (channel or profile letters) is worth the extra investment.

If you want the same dimensional look with lighting, see our illuminated signage guide, or compare with 3D signage generally.

FAQ( 01 )

Generally yes — without internal LEDs, wiring, or a power connection, solid letters cost meaningfully less to fabricate and install.

A small standoff gap (typically 15-25mm) is common even for non-lit letters, since it's what creates the shadow and dimensional look; flush-mounting is also possible but looks flatter.

Metal (stainless steel or aluminium) generally holds up best outdoors long-term, followed by UV-stable acrylic; PVC foam and wood are better suited to indoor use.

Acrylic and PVC can be sourced in a wide range of factory colours or painted/vinyl-wrapped after fabrication; metal letters are typically left in a brushed/polished finish or powder-coated.

Threaded studs or spacers are fixed into the back of each letter and set into the wall, holding the letter at a slight distance for the shadow effect.

Not usually without remaking them — since there's no cavity for LEDs or wiring built in, a genuine upgrade to lit signage generally means fabricating new letters rather than modifying existing solid ones.

Very little — occasional cleaning is normally all that's needed, since there's no electrical component to service.
